YORUBA OGBONI EDAN STAFFS FROM NIGERIA
Cast from brass with chain and rusty iron spikes. This pair of Edan figures, are a male and a female attached at the head by a chain. They are major symbolic objects of power among the Yoruba People, and are worn at official ceremonies by elders, members of the revered and exclusive Ogboni Society, who act as judges and counselors for the village or nation.
They are worn suspended from the neck while performing solemn duties. The figures represent the survival of the Yoruba People, being symbols of balance between male and female and of the future through procreation.
Bought from a gallery in London in 1992.
Each figure: Height:  19 cms Width:     3 cms Depth:     3 cms
Weight of pair:  320 grams
We are HENDRE
Most items were collected by ourselves while we were living and working in Papua New Guinea in the 1980's.  We used to sell art and artefacts from Africa and South East Asia on eBay until around 10 years ago.
We are now downsizing from our large old farmhouse to something more manageable for our age. So we are selling mostly our own collection of items from around the house.
Some carvings have signs of wear and tear due to age. Some have cracking which occurs as a result of taking items from the tropics to a colder, drier environment.
Please take a look at our other items from Africa, India, Papua New Guinea, Irian Jaya, Bali and Burma.
Please email if you have any questions.
Postage in the UK is by Royal Mail second class signed for. International postage by eBay Global Shipping programme.
